Does taking notes improve learning?

I may be old-fashioned but I still believe that students who take notes in class are better learners. Most of our staff agree and we sometimes find it difficult to convince our students. In this digital age it seems that taking a photo on their Ipad or smart phone is a short-cut to learning.

As a believer in the process of writing to fix words and concepts more firmly in the brain, I was interested to read Ben Casnocha’s article on Linked In. He cites some interesting examples of well-established entrepreneurs and CEOs who are still taking notes, believing that there’s always something to learn. He makes the point that it’s the process of taking notes – whether in a notebook or on a tablet – that helps us to remember and process key information.
